So, you’ve earned your Commercial Pilot License (CPL)—what’s next? If you’re aiming for a job with a commercial airline, there’s one more crucial step: Type Rating.

In this guide, Speed Jet Aviation explains what Type Rating means, why it’s mandatory for airline jobs, and how our Bahrain Gulf Partnership gives you a competitive edge with global training exposure.

What is Type Rating?

Type Rating is a specialized certification that qualifies a pilot to operate a specific aircraft type, such as an Airbus A320 or Boeing 737.

Even if you hold a valid CPL, you cannot fly a commercial jet without being Type Rated for that specific aircraft.

DGCA and global aviation authorities require Type Rating before airlines can assign you as a co-pilot or first officer.

Why Type Rating is Important for Airline Jobs

1. Mandatory for Airline Employment

  • Airlines won’t recruit pilots without Type Rating on the aircraft they operate.
  • Commonly required aircraft: Airbus A320, Boeing 737, ATR 72

2. Faster Recruitment Process

  • Airlines prefer candidates who already have Type Rating—they can be deployed faster
    with minimal in-house training.

3. Aircraft Handling Proficiency

  • Type Rating provides advanced simulator training, system knowledge, emergency handling, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for that aircraft.

4. Higher Job Readiness

  • Type Rated pilots are seen as more “job-ready,” which helps reduce the training cost burden on airlines.

What Does Type Rating Training Include?
